DWP PIP: 533 conditions that qualify for £194 weekly payment

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published a list of 533 conditions for which at least one successful Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claim has been made as of February 2025. PIP is a benefit for people who need help with extra living costs due to a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability affecting their ability to complete everyday tasks.

Payment rates and eligibility

PIP has two parts: the daily living part and the mobility part, each with a lower and higher weekly rate. Daily living starts at £76.70 for the lower rate and rises to £114.60 for the higher rate. Mobility is £30.30 for the lower rate and £80 for the higher rate. Someone eligible for the higher element of both parts could receive up to £194.60 a week.

Eligibility is not based on a fixed list of conditions. PIP is awarded following a discretionary assessment to determine whether a condition affects daily living or mobility. In theory, almost any condition could lead to an award if it meets the criteria. However, being on the list does not guarantee a successful claim; success depends on how the condition affects the individual.

Success rates and criteria

According to Benefits And Work, PIP claims for Rheumatoid Arthritis have a 72% success rate, while claims for Type 1 Diabetes have a 27% success rate. The DWP list includes conditions ranging from allergies and ADHD to whiplash injury, autism, cancer, Down's syndrome, Parkinson's disease, cardiac issues, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

The daily living part may be paid if help is needed with preparing food, eating and drinking, managing medicines or treatments, washing and bathing, using the toilet, dressing and undressing, reading, managing money, socialising, and talking, listening and understanding. The mobility part may be paid if help is needed with working out a route and following it, physically moving around, or leaving home.

Payment details and full list

Successful claimants receive payment every four weeks, and PIP does not affect tax liability. The full list of conditions with at least one successful claim includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the 533 conditions published by the DWP.
