Costco Recalls Mini Beignets Over Undeclared Hazelnut Allergy Hazard
Costco Recalls Beignets Over Undeclared Hazelnut Risk

Costco has issued an urgent recall for a popular bakery item sold across multiple states, warning customers of a serious undeclared allergen that could trigger life-threatening reactions. The wholesale retailer announced the recall of its Mini Beignets filled with Caramel after discovering that the pastries were accidentally filled with Chocolate Hazelnut instead.

Severe Allergy Risk Prompts Immediate Action

The recall centres on the dangerous presence of hazelnut, which is not listed on the product's labelling. This omission poses "the risk of severe life-threatening allergic reaction" for anyone with a tree nut allergy who consumes the beignets. Tree nuts are classified as one of the nine major food allergens in the United States, alongside wheat, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, soybeans, milk, peanuts, and sesame.

Affected States and Timeframe

The recalled Mini Beignets were sold at Costco warehouses in 22 states between January 16, 2026, and January 30, 2026. The affected states include:

  • Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia
  • Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan
  • Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon
  • Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington

Customer Guidance and Refund Information

Costco is urging customers not to consume the Mini Beignets, particularly those with known tree nut allergies. Instead, shoppers can return the product to any Costco location for a full refund. The company has confirmed that no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.

Understanding Food Allergy Dangers

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, allergic reactions to major food allergens can range from mild symptoms like hives and lip swelling to severe, potentially fatal anaphylaxis. This serious condition may involve respiratory problems and shock, requiring immediate medical attention.

Recent Costco Product Recalls

This is not the first time Costco has recalled products over health concerns. In September, the retailer recalled its Kirkland brand Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke Bowl due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination in green onions. Those affected products were sold in deli sections across 32 states.

In November, Costco also recalled ready-to-eat Caesar Salad and Chicken Sandwich with Caesar Salad items because of plastic foreign material discovered in the salad dressing. These recalls highlight ongoing challenges in food safety and quality control within the retail sector.

Broader Retail Recall Landscape

Costco is not alone in facing product safety issues. In December, Minnesota-based Gold Star Distribution, Inc., recalled nearly 2,000 products after FDA inspectors found unsanitary conditions at their facility. The agency reported "the presence of rodent excreta, rodent urine, and bird droppings" in areas storing medical devices, drugs, human food, pet food, and cosmetics.

This recall was declared a Class II event on January 22, indicating that affected items could pose serious health risks. Popular snacks included in this separate recall encompassed:

  1. Jif Crunchy Peanut Butter and Nutella
  2. Skittles, Snickers, Twix, and Haribo Gummy Bears
  3. Pringles and Takis
  4. Breakfast cereals including Kellogg's Rice Krispies, Cheerios, and Lucky Charms

The consecutive recalls across different retailers underscore the critical importance of rigorous food safety protocols and transparent labelling practices to protect consumers from potentially dangerous allergens and contaminants.
