Air fryers remain one of the UK's most beloved kitchen gadgets, but keeping them clean is essential for performance. A cleaning expert has shared a simple hack using two common kitchen items that requires no scrubbing.
Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila on TikTok, recommends removing the air fryer basket and placing it in the sink. Sprinkle a generous amount of bicarbonate of soda over any stubborn grime, then drizzle washing-up liquid on top. Pour boiling water over the mixture to create a fizzing reaction that loosens burnt-on food.
Leave the solution to soak for a while, then drain the dirty water. The combination of bicarbonate of soda and washing-up liquid breaks down greasy residue without the need for scrubbing. For more stubborn areas, a paste can be made from bicarbonate of soda and water.
Dr Oetker notes that bicarbonate of soda's gentle abrasive properties remove grime without causing wear and tear. Its alkaline nature also neutralises acids, eliminating unpleasant odours. Washing-up liquid adds surfactants that help water and oil combine, targeting bacteria that bicarbonate of soda cannot reach.
Regular deep cleaning with this method ensures the air fryer remains efficient and safe to use, with no lingering smells or stubborn residues.
