Cinnamon: The Kitchen Staple That Keeps Flies Away from Bins
Cinnamon Keeps Flies Away from Bins

Flies buzzing around bins can be a persistent nuisance, especially in summer. A simple, natural solution involves using ground cinnamon, a common kitchen staple, to deter them.

Simple Method with Ground Cinnamon

Cleaning enthusiast Anna Louisa, known as Anna Louisa at Home on TikTok, shared a fly repellent trick. It involves scattering a liberal amount of ground cinnamon into the bin and onto the lid. This works whether the bin is empty or partly full.

The same principle can be applied around property entry points. Cinnamon's strong aroma masks unpleasant smells from bin contents, preventing flies from lingering.

Why Cinnamon Works

Cinnamon repels flies due to potent oils like cinnamaldehyde and eugenol, which overwhelm their sense of smell, irritate taste receptors, and interfere with communication. Flies have taste receptors on their feet and bodies, so contact with cinnamon irritates them.

Lucie Bradley, gardening expert at Easy Garden Irrigation, said: "It contains cinnamaldehyde, which disrupts the nervous system of insects, making it difficult for them to move, find food, or locate mates."

Beyond flies, cinnamon can deter ants, fungus gnats, mites, aphids, mosquitoes, fruit flies, and wasps. For a less messy option, apply cinnamon essential oil to cotton wool pads.
