Overflowing toilets, filthy facilities and accidentally blocking someone else’s loo have been revealed as the nation’s biggest bathroom nightmares this Halloween. According to new research, 39% of Britons cite an overflowing bowl as their ultimate bathroom horror, closely followed by encountering a dirty toilet (35%) and causing a blockage while visiting a host’s home (33%).
Common Bathroom Mishaps
These scenarios are far from rare occurrences. Nearly half of the country (49%) have suffered the heart-stopping moment a toilet refuses to flush, while 42% have been caught short after reaching for the toilet paper only to find an empty roll.
Location plays a major role in the level of mortification. Almost half of respondents (45%) named a friend’s house as the most embarrassing setting for a plumbing mishap, ahead of a busy restaurant (40%) and right before a job interview (38%). Meanwhile, 35% said a bathroom blunder during a first date would leave them thoroughly red-faced.
Value of a Working Toilet
The survey was commissioned by eco-friendly toilet paper brand Who Gives A Crap to mark the launch of its Spooky Limited Edition loo rolls, which come wrapped in designs featuring awkward vampires and kooky black cats.
Beyond everyday social embarrassment, the findings highlight just how much the British public values reliable plumbing. One in five people (20%) admitted they would rather spend an entire night alone in a supposedly haunted house than go without access to a clean, safe toilet, and 37% would prefer to spend 24 hours in pitch darkness.
When asked to choose just one household essential to keep for a week, a working toilet came out on top for 30% of Brits. The humble loo beat modern staples including mobile phones (19%), a bed (19%), a hot shower (18%), Wi-Fi (10%) and a washing machine (4%).
Sanitation Crisis Awareness
Despite this reliance on indoor plumbing, 56% of those polled admitted they were unaware of the scale of the global sanitation crisis, which leaves 3.4 billion people worldwide without access to safe facilities. Who Gives A Crap donates 50% of its profits—including sales from its seasonal Halloween range—to projects providing clean water and sanitation globally.
Anna Dominey, General Manager at Who Gives A Crap, said: “We’re wholeheartedly embracing spooky season this year and having a bit of fun with our Limited-Edition Halloween toilet paper and bathroom horror research. But the stats also show just how much we value having a safe, working toilet – something most of us are lucky enough not to have to think twice about.
“Behind the ghosts and ghouls, there’s a bigger purpose too. Billions of people still don’t have access to a safe toilet, which is why we donate 50% of our profits to help change that. If our Spooky rolls can make people smile, get them thinking and help more people access safe sanitation, that’s a pretty good Halloween treat.”
