Blue Badge holders are being urged to renew their permits months before they expire to avoid accidentally letting them lapse.
The key point is that renewing early does not mean losing time on the existing badge – the new one only starts the day after the current one expires.
When to apply and how
Guidance suggests applying around 12 weeks before expiry in Scotland and Wales, while England advises applying "some weeks" beforehand.
The renewal process can be completed online and requires personal details, identity documents and eligibility confirmation where needed.
Fees and fines
Fees vary across Britain – up to £10 in England, £20 in Scotland, and free in Wales.
Blue Badges must be renewed every three years and eligibility is checked each time, as they are not renewed automatically.
Displaying an expired badge could result in a fine of up to £1,000, as the government warns "misuse is a crime and can lead to prosecution".
