A comparison of own-brand lemonades from UK supermarkets has crowned Aldi's 49p offering as the winner, beating the established Schweppes brand. The taste test, conducted by Mia O'Hare, scored Aldi's lemonade 10/10, narrowly ahead of Schweppes which scored 9/10.
Rankings and Results
The test covered lemonades from Tesco, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer, Schweppes, and Aldi. Tesco's lemonade, priced at 90p, came last with a score of 1/10. Despite a powerful aroma, it lacked lemon flavour and fizz. Lidl's 49p lemonade was next, scoring 3/10, described as watery and lacking both flavour and carbonation.
Sainsbury's lemonade, at 85p, scored 5/10, offering plenty of bubbles but a sweet kick that was slightly too intense, with a lemon taste superior to Tesco's and Lidl's but still improvable. Marks and Spencer's diet lemonade, at £1.50, scored 6/10, noted for being zesty and close to real lemons but with insufficient fizz.
Top Performers
Schweppes, priced at £1.75 from Sainsbury's, scored 9/10, praised for its distinctly lemony, crisp, and refreshing taste, striking the perfect balance between fizziness and lemon flavour. However, Aldi's lemonade, also 49p, scored 10/10, producing the most impressive fizz and carbonation among all supermarket varieties, bearing the strongest resemblance to Schweppes at a fraction of the price.
