In a recent taste test, Aldi's 49p lemonade outperformed the popular branded version from Schweppes, which costs £1.75. The budget option scored top marks for its fizziness and lemon flavour, closely matching the premium brand at a fraction of the price.
Supermarket Lemonades Compared
Mia O'Hare, a writer, sampled lemonades from Tesco, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer, and Aldi, alongside Schweppes. The goal was to see if any own-brand could rival the well-known label.
Schweppes scored 9/10, praised for being lemony, crisp, and refreshing, with an ideal balance of fizz and flavour. However, Aldi narrowly took the top spot with a perfect 10/10, noted for having the most bubbles and tasting most like Schweppes, but at a much lower cost.
Rankings and Ratings
Tesco's lemonade (90p) came last with a 1/10 rating, lacking lemon flavour and fizz. Lidl's (49p) scored 3/10, described as watery. Sainsbury's (85p) earned 5/10 for good fizz but an overpowering sugary taste. Marks and Spencer's diet version (£1.50) scored 6/10, with a zesty flavour but insufficient carbonation.
The results highlight that budget options can compete with, and even surpass, premium brands in taste tests.
