£460 winter cash for DWP claimants before Christmas - and not all are means-tested
£460 winter cash for DWP claimants before Christmas - not all means-tested

Millions of Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) claimants are due to receive additional financial support this winter, with three benefits worth up to £460 available before Christmas and a fourth that is weather-dependent. While most payments are means-tested, not all are, and eligibility criteria vary depending on the scheme.

Most payments will be issued automatically, but in certain circumstances households will need to apply. The support covers energy bills, heating costs, and a modest additional payment at Christmas.

Winter Fuel Payment: £100 to £300

The Winter Fuel Payment is issued to eligible state pensioners in England, Wales and Northern Ireland born on or before 27 June 1960. The DWP will send letters in October or November, with payments arriving in November or December.

While it will be paid to all pensioners born after the cut-off date, anyone with an annual income exceeding £35,000 will have this recovered through tax adjustments. Those living in Scotland will instead receive the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, which provides up to £316.79 automatically.

Subject to factors including age and living arrangements, this payment can reach up to £300. It will not affect other benefits and generally does not need to be applied for. If you receive any of the following benefits, no application is necessary: State Pension, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Carer's Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), awards from the War Pensions Scheme, Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, Incapacity Benefit, or Industrial Death Benefit.

However, if you do not receive any of these benefits, you will need to make a claim if either of the following apply: you've not got the Winter Fuel Payment before, or you've deferred your State Pension since your last Winter Fuel Payment. While the vast majority of eligible people automatically receive this payment, those with annual earnings exceeding £35,000 will be required to repay it unless they decide to opt out.

Warm Home Discount: £150

The Warm Home Discount Scheme offers a one-off £150 reduction on your electricity bill. If you qualify, your electricity supplier will apply the discount directly to your account. The funds are not paid to you personally, and it will not impact your entitlement to a Winter Fuel Payment or Cold Weather Payment.

The discount is typically applied automatically if you meet the eligibility criteria. However, if you live in Scotland, you may need to apply directly through your energy supplier. Should your supplier provide both gas and electricity and you qualify, you may be able to receive the discount on your gas bill instead. Get in touch with your supplier to confirm.

The Warm Home Discount scheme reopens in October for winter 2026. It is credited directly to your electricity or gas bill if your supplier participates in the scheme and you are in receipt of means-tested benefits including Universal Credit, Pension Credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Housing Benefit.

The following suppliers will participate in the winter 2026 to 2027 scheme: 100Green (formerly Green Energy UK or GEUK), Boost, British Gas, E - also known as E (Gas and Electricity), Ecotricity, EDF, EnergyCoop – see Octopus Energy, E.ON Next, Fuse Energy, Good Energy, Home Energy, London Power, Octopus Energy, Outfox Energy, OVO, Sainsbury's Energy, Scottish Gas – see British Gas, ScottishPower, So Energy, Square 1 Energy Ltd, TruEnergy, Tulo Energy, Utilita, and Utility Warehouse.

DWP Christmas Bonus: £10

This is a tax-free payment paid automatically each December to those in receipt of certain long-term benefits during the first full week of the month. There is no need to make a claim, as the payment should be issued automatically. To qualify, you must be receiving at least one of the eligible benefits during the qualifying week — typically the first full week of December.

Eligible benefits include: Adult Disability Payment, Armed Forces Independence Payment, Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, Carer Support Payment, Child Disability Payment, Constant Attendance Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes), Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (once the main phase of the benefit is entered after the first 13 weeks of claim), Disability Living Allowance, Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate, Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers), Mobility Supplement, Pension Age Disability Payment, Pension Credit - the guarantee element, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (SADLA), Severe Disablement Allowance (transitionally protected), State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit), Unemployability Supplement or Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes), War Disablement Pension at State Pension age, War Widow's Pension, Widowed Mother's Allowance, Widowed Parent's Allowance, and Widow's Pension.

Should you not have claimed your State Pension and are ineligible for any of the other qualifying benefits listed above, you will not be entitled to a Christmas Bonus.

Cold Weather Payments: £25 per week

This scheme is designed to support households when temperatures fall significantly. It runs from November 1 through to March 31. A £25 payment is triggered for every seven-day period of consecutive sub-zero temperatures recorded in your postcode area, and is paid to those receiving certain low-income benefits.

The payment is available to those in receipt of certain benefits, including Pension Credit, Income Support and Universal Credit, or Support for Mortgage Interest. It is administered automatically, meaning there is generally no need to submit an application. Those living in Scotland are not eligible for Cold Weather Payments, but may instead qualify for an annual Winter Heating Payment.
