Waitrose Pronunciation: It's 'Wait-Rose', Not 'Way-trose', Says Supermarket
Waitrose Pronunciation: It's 'Wait-Rose', Not 'Way-trose'

Waitrose, the upmarket British supermarket chain, has officially clarified that its name is pronounced 'Wait-Rose', not 'Way-trose' as commonly said. The confirmation came from a TikTok content creator who contacted the company directly.

Founders' Names Reveal Correct Pronunciation

Annabel Port, who runs the account @theotherbritishmuseum on TikTok and Instagram, shared the revelation after reaching out to Waitrose. A spokesperson told her: 'The pronunciation Wait-Rose, is the original way, as it comes from the founders' last names, Waite and Rose.' The founders were Wallace Waite and Arthur Rose, who established the store in 1904 as 'Waite, Rose & Taylor'. After Taylor left, the name was shortened to 'Waitrose' in 1908.

According to Port, the correct pronunciation features a distinct gap between 'Wait' and 'Rose', with a harder 't' sound on 'Wait', rather than the two syllables merging. She noted: 'It's unclear when this morphed into Way-trose, but it slowly became the name and Waitrose just went along with it. But if you want to be both correct and retro, you should say Wait-Rose.'

Social Media Reaction and Brand History

Waitrose's official TikTok account confirmed the pronunciation in a comment on Port's video, stating: 'It's pronounced Wait-rose, not Waitrose.' The post sparked a flurry of reactions. User @idas24601 commented: 'OK, I'm going to be insufferable with this information.' Another, @user67160721420087, wrote: 'My mum loves spending my inheritance in Waitrose,' referencing the store's premium prices. @matpa079 said: 'I promise I can't hear the difference between the two pronunciations help,' while @akint_akint declared: 'I'll die before I call it Wait-Rose.'

Port also shared historical facts about the supermarket chain. Waitrose was the first to sell organic produce in 1983 and the first to offer prepackaged sushi in 1996. As of June 2026, there are 426 Waitrose stores across the UK.
