The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released its annual baby name data for 2025, revealing significant shifts in the top 100 lists for boys and girls in the UK. Muhammad and Olivia retain the top spots, but several beloved names have fallen sharply in popularity.

Boys' Names: Muhammad Holds Steady, Oliver Declines

Muhammad remains the most popular boys' name for the third consecutive year, a position it has held since entering the top 10 in 2016. However, Oliver has dropped from third place in 2024 to sixth in 2025. The top five boys' names for 2025 are: Muhammad, Noah, Leo, Luca, and Arthur. Other notable changes include Vinnie, which surged 33 places to rank 58th, and Charlie, which fell from 17th to 22nd, exiting the top 20.

Girls' Names: Olivia Tops Again, Lily Rises

Olivia continues as the most popular girls' name for the second year running. Lily moved up from third to second, while Amelia dropped from second to third. Ivy declined from fifth to ninth. The top five girls' names are: Olivia, Lily, Amelia, Isla, and Florence. Ellie, once a firm favourite, has vanished from the top 100 entirely.

The ONS data includes the complete top 100 names for both genders. For boys, names like Freddie, Archie, Theo, and Henry remain popular, while newcomers such as Vinnie, Felix, and Rupert have entered the list. For girls, names like Freya, Poppy, Elsie, and Isabella continue to be favoured, while newer entries include Raya, Anaya, and Frankie.

According to the ONS, the data reflects birth registrations from the full year of 2025, providing a comprehensive picture of naming trends across England and Wales.
