Ryanair passengers have been warned to pack cardboard boxes inside their hand luggage following the budget carrier's announcement last summer. The airline boosted its personal bag allowance by 20% in response to updated EU regulations, allowing basic fare passengers to bring a larger bag on board from September 2025. The new bag dimensions are up to 40cm x 30cm x 20cm, weighing no more than 10kg, and must fit under the seat.
Packing Expert Warns Against Overstuffing
Packing specialist Tom Schott from Schott Packaging warns that the bigger allowance may tempt travellers to overstuff their bags, leading to penalty charges. He advises placing a lightweight cardboard box inside the bag to create a rigid frame, using every corner and preventing bulges that attract gate staff.
Tom said: "The new dimension is a game-changer, but only if you use it wisely." His additional tips include using sealable bags to maximise space, keeping belongings organised into smaller sections, and protecting valuables. He recommends "thinking in modules"—grouping items into compact cubes using small boxes or pouches to eliminate wasted space.
Pre-Planning Your Bag
Tom also encourages travellers to pre-plan by laying everything out on the floor within a 40cm x 30cm outline first. "This provides a real-world view of what fits and helps you assemble your packed modules logically and quickly."
