Petrol Drivers Hit with 20p Per Mile Charges

Petrol drivers are paying up to 20p per mile to use the road this July as fuel costs continue to strain UK motorists. According to motoring experts at NimbleFins, the average UK miles per gallon is around 36 miles, meaning road users are spending 20p for every mile driven. Average petrol costs currently sit at 155p per litre, slightly down from 157p in May and 158p in April, but still high enough to burden cash-strapped drivers.

Fuel Prices Remain High Despite Recent Drops

Despite the slight fall in petrol and diesel costs in recent months, the RAC stresses that prices are still significantly higher than earlier in the year. RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "While diesel dropping 17p in a month is very positive, it’s also important to realise that its average price shot up 49p a litre from the end of February to 191.54p on 15 April, which equates to a rise of more than a penny a day. So, the cost of the fuel today remains far higher than it was at the start of the war."

Predicted Savings on the Horizon

However, the RAC has predicted that petrol and diesel drivers could soon enjoy hefty savings at the pumps, with costs set to fall under 150p per litre. If true, motorists would only be paying 19p per litre to use the roads, a modest saving on current average costs. Simon added: "As things stand, petrol should dip under 150p soon and diesel ought to get to below 160p but we would need the price of oil to fall further to see a return to the pre-conflict prices."

RAC Fuel Watch Forecasts Further Falls

RAC Fuel Watch has predicted that unleaded, diesel, and super unleaded fees "should fall" in a major win for motorists struggling with costs. The RAC added: "In England, the lowest priced petrol is currently being sold by GW Holmes of Etherley Moor Garage in Bishop Auckland at 139.7p. The best diesel price appears to be 152.9p Linthouse Lane Service Station in Wolverhampton, which is matched by two Sainsbury’s sites also in the city."
