Nationwide Building Society Reaffirms Branch Commitment Until 2030

A senior executive from Nationwide Building Society has provided a significant update on the future of its branch network, assuring customers that all 605 high street locations will remain operational until at least 2030. This announcement comes as the banking sector faces widespread branch closures, with many competitors scaling back their physical presence.

Branch Usage Remains High Among Customers

Stephen Noakes, Director of Retail at Nationwide, recently addressed the Treasury Committee, emphasising the ongoing importance of branch services. He revealed that over the past 12 months, 56 per cent of Nationwide's customers have used their branches, demonstrating that it is not a minority offering.

"For Nationwide, it is not a minority offering," Noakes told MPs. "If you look to the demographic of the average Nationwide customer using a branch, it is typically older."

He explained that branches serve a disproportionate number of offline customers, highlighting their crucial role in maintaining access to financial services for all demographics.

Services Available at Nationwide Branches

Customers can access a wide range of services at Nationwide branches, including:

  • Making deposits or withdrawals from accounts
  • Paying in cheques
  • Receiving guidance on financial matters from branch managers

Noakes emphasised that Nationwide's commitment to branches supports the development of the banking sector by providing channel choice, particularly through mutual organisations like building societies.

Limited Circumstances for Branch Closures

Nationwide has stated that it will only close or relocate a branch if circumstances arise beyond its control. According to the building society's website, closures will only occur if "there's no other workable option."

"I think that situation will exist beyond 2030, when we currently have our branch commitment to," Noakes added, suggesting that branches may remain important even after the current pledge expires.

Potential Bonus Payments for Members in 2026

In addition to the branch update, Nationwide has provided information about its Fairer Share scheme, which distributes profits among members through bonus payments. Over the past three years, the society has made three payments of £100 each to millions of members.

A spokesperson explained: "Nationwide's Board will decide on a Fairer Share payment for 2026 and it will depend on our financial performance. That assessment will be made after our financial year-end, with the eligibility criteria for this year being agreed then too."

The decision will be announced as part of Nationwide's full-year results in May. Last year, more than four million customers received the payment.

Eligibility Requirements for Bonus Payments

To qualify for the Fairer Share payment, customers typically need:

  1. A qualifying current account
  2. Either a qualifying savings account or a qualifying mortgage

Financial expert Martin Lewis recently discussed the payment on his BBC podcast, offering advice to members about the scheme.

Nationwide's dual announcement regarding branch preservation and potential bonus payments reinforces its position as a customer-focused mutual organisation in an increasingly digital banking landscape.
