Monzo Hires Google Veteran for African Expansion Drive

Monzo has appointed former Google executive Diana Layfield as its new group chief executive, signalling a push for international growth, particularly in Africa. Layfield, who previously served as a general manager at Google overseeing international expansion and AI integration, will take up the role in February.

Current CEO TS Anil, who announced his departure after five years at the helm, said he spotted an opportunity to bring Layfield on board during the search for a new UK boss. “It’s always been my belief that great leaders make way for others,” Anil stated, adding that Layfield would drive the business globally into its next chapter.

Layfield brings a wealth of experience, having previously headed Standard Chartered’s Africa region and worked as a medical relief pilot in war zones. She described joining Monzo as “hugely exciting” and emphasised her focus on delivering the bank’s potential both in the UK and internationally.

Under Anil’s leadership, Monzo grew from nearly four million customers in 2020 to over 13 million, becoming the UK’s seventh-largest bank by customer numbers. The bank also recorded its first pre-tax profit last year. Anil will transition to an advisory role at the bank.
