Enzo Maresca faces a major transfer test after Leeds United approached Manchester City for goalkeeper James Trafford. Trafford, who was the best second-choice goalkeeper in the league last season, is keen on a move to Elland Road.
Trafford's Role Last Season
Trafford's performances in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup helped City win both domestic trophies. While Gianluigi Donnarumma played in the Premier League and Champions League, Trafford held down the fort in his absence. However, at 23, Trafford needs regular first-team football. "No illusions, it hasn't been easy at all," he admitted after winning the Carabao Cup in March. "It's been really tough at times, but I have a really good set of people around me."
Options for Maresca
If Trafford leaves, Donnarumma would be the No.1, but Maresca needs a replacement plan. There are four options: signing a similar profile to Trafford, which seems unlikely; accepting a young player or veteran as backup; or promoting from within. The youthful option is complicated by loan deals for Pierce Charles and Oliver Whatmuff. The experienced route has fewer risks but limited options—Karl Darlow was signed by Manchester United. Promoting Marcus Bettinelli, who last made a senior appearance in 2022, would be risky. Each solution has pitfalls, making Maresca's task difficult.
