Manchester United Signal Reluctance to Meet Chelsea's £50m Valuation for Andrey Santos
Manchester United have communicated to Chelsea that they are not prepared to pay the £50m asking price for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, according to reports. The 22-year-old has been identified as a potential target after United missed out on other midfield options.
Manager Michael Carrick is keen to bolster his midfield after losing Casemiro at the end of last season and with Manuel Ugarte sidelined due to a serious World Cup injury. Santos, who joined Chelsea from Vasco da Gama in 2023, has become a first-team regular but remains behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in the pecking order.
United's Search for Midfield Reinforcements
Manchester United had previously pursued Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes but withdrew from both races due to high fees. Anderson is set to join Manchester City for £116m, while Fernandes has moved to Tottenham for £85m. United's reluctance to match those valuations has led them to consider Santos as a more affordable alternative.
According to the Daily Mail, United have already indicated they are unwilling to meet Chelsea's £50m price tag, suggesting the Blues may need to lower their demands to facilitate a deal.
Santos Open to Exit, but Chelsea's Position Uncertain
Santos is reportedly 'open' to leaving Chelsea, especially with limited starting opportunities. However, his prospects could improve if Enzo Fernandez secures a move to Real Madrid, a deal that remains uncertain despite interest from the Spanish giants.
United first showed interest in Santos last summer but opted to sign attacking players instead. Now, with midfield reinforcements a priority, the club may revisit the move—but only at a reduced fee.
