Manchester United have held talks to sign San Lorenzo and Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, according to the player's agent. Mario Jara confirmed the discussions in an interview with DSports, revealing that United were among the English clubs to have made enquiries.
Gill emerged as one of the surprise stars of the 2026 World Cup, playing every minute as Paraguay reached the last 16. He notably knocked out Germany with a penalty-shootout display, saving spot-kicks from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade. Across the tournament, he made 28 saves – the most of any goalkeeper – and kept clean sheets against Turkey and Australia.
Agent confirms offers and negotiations
Jara stated that there have been two 'concrete' offers from European clubs. 'We are in talks with English clubs, as well as clubs in Germany. There were enquiries from Manchester United,' he explained. 'We only received two concrete offers. We are currently in the negotiation phase.'
The 26-year-old had earlier told Argentine outlet Ole that offers were arriving but he remained focused on San Lorenzo. 'Offers are arriving but until something is concrete I'm going to keep thinking about San Lorenzo,' Gill said. 'I still have a contract with San Lorenzo. If nothing official happens, my head is at San Lorenzo.'
Step up to European football
Jara believes the time is right for Gill to move to a top European league. 'The sale is close, the time is right. We have to handle it very carefully because there are many things involved,' he added. 'It's ideal for him to take a step up in quality. He's prepared and capable of playing in any league, without a doubt.'
He also stressed the move would benefit San Lorenzo. 'We're trying to finalise it as quickly as possible for everyone's benefit. It would be very important for San Lorenzo, hopefully it will come to fruition.'
Jara was not surprised by Gill's World Cup performances, citing the goalkeeper's personality. 'I'm not surprised by the level he's playing at, not at all. He has no ceiling and he has a lot of room to grow, but what he did against Germany really catapulted him. He has a great capacity for handling those kinds of situations. He has a great personality for coping with difficult situations.'
Possible role at Manchester United
If Gill moves to Old Trafford, he would join as backup to Senne Lammens under manager Michael Carrick. Gill's current contract with San Lorenzo runs until the end of 2027. Other clubs linked with the 6 ft 6 in goalkeeper include Olympiakos, Aston Villa, Ipswich, Torino, Fiorentina, Feyenoord and Bayern Munich.
