Kenneth Newton, 57, and Melanie James, 63, have been found guilty of murdering Rubin Blount, a vulnerable 28-year-old man placed in their care. The verdict was delivered at Stafford Crown Court on Thursday, July 30.
The Abuse
Over an extended period, Newton and James subjected Rubin to repeated beatings, threats, and verbal abuse. They forced him to remain standing for prolonged periods and withheld medical treatment after their assaults, leading to a severe decline in his condition. The couple also mocked his appearance and intelligence.
Newton was Rubin's step-brother. The pair, now of Stafford Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, lived in Edale, Tamworth, Staffordshire, at the time of the abuse.
Medical Emergency and Death
In November 2022, police attended a property in Tamworth after reports of concerns for a man's welfare. Rubin was taken urgently to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield. He went into cardiac arrest shortly after arrival and was resuscitated, but remained in a critical condition. Medical staff discovered widespread pneumonia, a serious infection, 50 fractured ribs, burns, lesions, and abrasions. Rubin died three days later.
Investigation and Conditions
Following their arrest, Newton and James told detectives they were aware of Rubin's vulnerabilities and care needs but denied harming him. Officers found mould and what police described as "abhorrent" conditions in his bedroom.
The jury heard that Rubin's injuries resulted from violent acts by the pair, who intended to cause him serious harm. Both were remanded in custody pending sentencing at the same court on September 25.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald of Staffordshire Police said: "The suffering these two people inflicted upon Rubin, a vulnerable adult, was both cruel and deplorable. I am pleased the jury has today found them guilty of their actions. My thoughts remain with Rubin's parents, who have endured unimaginable heartache throughout this process and continue to live with the devastating loss of their son.
"The officers and staff involved in this case have worked tirelessly to investigate and to gather the evidence needed to ensure the jury were able to arrive at their decision today. I also know Rubin was well known within the community, and news of his death deeply affected many people. My thoughts, and the thoughts of everyone involved in this investigation, are with all those who knew and cared about him."
