A British Airways flight from Barbados to London was cancelled after cabin crew allegedly went on a vodka-fuelled bender at a luxury resort, leaving 336 passengers stranded at the airport.
Incident at Luxury Resort
The incident occurred on Saturday night, July 4, at a lavish honeymooner's resort in Barbados, according to The Sun. The crew, who had flown into the Caribbean island, were reportedly drinking heavily. A steward allegedly collapsed on the floor and had to be taken to his room, while a stewardess was reportedly sick in the bar. Guests filmed the group, who claimed to be BA crew.
Flight Cancellation
Passengers arriving at Barbados Airport on Sunday discovered that flight BA254 back to London had been cancelled. The Sun alleges that four crew members have been suspended following the incident. A source said: “One of the perks of working as flight crew for BA is staying at incredible hotels in far-flung destinations. And the team who had flown into Barbados were making the most of their stay at an idyllic retreat where the guests are all made up of honeymooners and families on a trip-of-a-lifetime. It’s an immense privilege, and it’s understandable that the group wanted to enjoy themselves. But some of this crew behaved in a manner that did not befit British Airways. The vodka and beers kept being poured and some of the team were clearly drunk.”
Impact on Passengers and Airline
The crew were due to operate the return flight the next day, but two members were reportedly taken ill, forcing airline bosses to stand the crew down. The insider claimed that costs for British Airways could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds if the airline must find new accommodation for future Barbados trips. The Daily Star contacted British Airways for comment. In a statement to The Sun, the airline said: "We expect the highest standards of our crew, and we are urgently investigating this matter."
