Attendance Allowance Tips Boost Pensioners' Income by £458 Monthly

Attendance Allowance, a tax-free benefit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), can provide pensioners with up to £458.40 every four weeks. The charity Independent Age has released a factsheet with seven tips to help claimants navigate the application process.

What Is Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision due to illness, disability, or mental health conditions. It is not means-tested and does not affect other State support. Payments range from £76.70 to £114.60 per week, equating to £306.80 or £458.40 every four weeks.

Who Can Claim?

Eligibility includes those needing help during the day or night with personal care, such as dressing, eating, bathing, or using the toilet. It also covers supervision for safety. Conditions include physical disabilities, mental health issues, learning difficulties, sensory impairments, and long-term illnesses. As of November 2025, 1.7 million people claimed Attendance Allowance in Great Britain, including 185,895 in Scotland receiving the devolved Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP).

Independent Age's Top Tips for Claiming

Independent Age advises: explain how your condition affects daily life; answer all questions with examples; include time taken for tasks and help needed; describe variations in needs; mention avoided activities; detail consequences of unmet care; and provide supporting information from carers or medical professionals.

How Much Can You Get?

The lower rate of £76.70 per week is for help during the day or night, while the higher rate of £114.60 is for help both day and night or for terminal illness. Payments are made every four weeks, totaling either £306.80 or £458.40. The money can be used for any purpose, such as taxis, bills, or home help.

Impact on Other Benefits

Attendance Allowance can increase other benefits like Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, and Council Tax Reduction. It does not affect State Pension or other income, and there is no savings limit.

How to Apply

Applicants must complete a claim form, available via GOV.UK or by phone. Citizens Advice offers guidance. Those approaching State Pension age may consider Personal Independence Payment (PIP) instead. In Scotland, claimants apply for PADP. Attendance Allowance cannot be claimed alongside PIP or Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
