Wolves Sack Rob Edwards After Seven Months, Peixoto Set to Replace
Wolves Sack Rob Edwards, Peixoto to Replace

Wolverhampton Wanderers have parted ways with manager Rob Edwards just seven months after his appointment, a decision that has surprised many within the club. The 43-year-old was brought in last November after leaving Middlesbrough, where he had been performing strongly in the Championship. Despite failing to prevent Wolves' relegation from the Premier League, finishing 19th, the hierarchy had initially indicated they would persevere with him.

Edwards' Role in Recruitment

Edwards had been instrumental in the club's summer recruitment, playing a key role in securing the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez. Midfielder Andre also pledged his future to the club, with Edwards central to that deal. However, it is understood that the board has now decided to dismiss him, with Gil Vicente manager Cesar Peixoto anticipated to be his successor. An official announcement could come later today.

Peixoto's Background

The Portuguese tactician has been at the helm of Gil Vicente since March last year and has previously managed Academica, Moreirense, and Pacos Ferreira. His appointment marks a shift in direction for Wolves as they aim for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Reaction to the Sacking

The decision to sack Edwards is perplexing given his pivotal role in securing key signings. Speaking after Trippier's arrival, Edwards had indicated he was the man to lead the club's promotion bid. He said: "We have to be up there this season, and I'd rather be there with good players! This doesn't add any more pressure, it just actually makes me feel better that we're building a squad that I've been banging on about."

He added: "We need to have a better and stronger squad than we had last year because we weren't able to compete well enough last year, and so we're working really hard to make sure we're competitive. Pressure is going to be there anyway because we're Wolves in the Championship after eight years of Premier League football."

Irony and Other Moves

In a twist of fate, former Wolves manager Gary O'Neil could also be on the verge of a move, with his name linked to the managerial vacancy at Ipswich Town following Kieran McKenna's exit. The sacking of Edwards has risked angering players who were convinced by his vision, but the club appears determined to pursue a new direction under Peixoto.
