King Charles praises the Tartan Army

During the opening, King Charles praised the Tartan Army, Scotland's football fans, for demonstrating the country's “rich culture” and “friendliness”. The monarch highlighted the positive impact of Scottish supporters on the nation's reputation.

Ceremonial procession and symbols of Scottish sovereignty

The ceremony began with the Crown of Scotland being escorted down the Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle. The crown, along with the Elizabeth Sword and the mace, was carried into the Parliament building through a guard of honour composed of young people. The procession also featured three Team Scotland athletes preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

First Minister John Swinney welcomes the monarch

After the King's speech, First Minister John Swinney welcomed the monarch and emphasised the connection between England and Scotland. He said: “Last time we welcomed a deeply respected Elizabeth, Queen of Scots. This time we welcome with the same respect Charles, King of Scots, a new monarch rooted in the deep, rich ground of the sovereignty of a people and a place that goes back many many generations.”

Local heroes and community recognition

Les Hoey's presence at the opening highlights the recognition of local heroes across Scotland. His work with the DreamMaker Foundation has positively impacted numerous families in Wishaw and beyond, providing support and joy to children with serious illnesses.
