Vitor Matos, the head coach of Swansea City, has reportedly attracted interest from Brazilian club Vasco da Gama, but a prohibitive release clause has deterred the Rio de Janeiro side. According to ESPN Brazil, Matos was one of three Portuguese managers considered by Vasco after the departure of former boss Renato Gaucho.
Release Clause Too High for Vasco
Vasco's executive director flew to Europe to explore potential targets and quickly discovered that securing Matos from Swansea would be a formidable challenge. The Portuguese coach, who joined the Swans in November 2025 following the dismissal of Alan Sheehan, is under contract until 2029. The release clause is reportedly considered too high by Vasco's hierarchy, who were left 'scared' by the figures involved. As a result, Vasco have moved on to other candidates.
Matos Focused on Pre-Season
Matos is now preparing for his first full pre-season in charge of Swansea City. He has previously expressed excitement about the weeks ahead and the importance of training ground work. Speaking towards the end of last season, Matos stated: "I will say it now, the best transfer [of the summer] will be the pre-season together. It doesn't mean that you're going to win all the games, but it means you create basics to be closer to success and you create basics that when there's a little bit of a storm, you always find a way to get out. That will be massive for us."
Transfer Window Plans
Swansea City are expected to be active in the summer transfer window, having already secured defender Stephen Welsh. However, Matos believes that the time spent on the training ground will be the most crucial factor in defining their success. The club's supporters will be keen to see how the squad develops under Matos' guidance as they aim for a strong campaign in the upcoming season.
