Manchester United may be forced into an unwanted transfer after midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained a devastating knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup. The 25-year-old was stretchered off during Uruguay's clash with Spain, and subsequent assessments have confirmed he will miss the vast majority of the 2026/27 season.
Injury Details and Social Media Confession
Ugarte appeared visibly distraught as he was carried from the pitch, pulling his shirt over his head. Manchester United confirmed on Sunday that he had suffered a knee ligament injury, though the club did not specify whether it was the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or medial collateral ligament (MCL). However, Ugarte's own social media post strongly indicated an ACL tear, as he described it as "the most serious injury a footballer can face."
In a heartfelt message, Ugarte wrote: "Suffering the most serious injury a footballer can face in one of the most important matches in my country's history, and seeing it end this way without being able to stay on the pitch and support my teammates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Hitting rock bottom will make me stronger in every sense, and I truly believe that's the case here. Without a doubt, when life wants you to stop, it finds a way to let you know. It's up to me to take the positives from this. Success in life is about starting again every time you fall. I'm incredibly grateful to Uruguay and United for being there for me from the moment it happened."
An ACL tear typically requires around 10 months of recovery, effectively ruling Ugarte out for the bulk of the 2026/27 campaign.
Transfer Plans Thrown into Disarray
The injury comes at a particularly cruel time for Ugarte, who had been eagerly anticipating the World Cup after limited game time at United. He had been earmarked for a summer departure from Old Trafford, as both the club and player believed a fresh start overseas was necessary following a challenging period in England. However, the injury now prevents any potential move until 2027.
This setback directly impacts United's transfer strategy. The Red Devils have already secured an agreement for Brazilian midfielder Ederson and are working to complete another midfield signing. Had Ugarte been sold, a replacement would have been pursued. Now, with Ugarte unable to be offloaded, United are short of numbers in midfield and may need to sign a third midfielder this summer.
Midfield Options and Potential Solutions
As it stands, United's midfield options for the 2026/27 season include Kobbie Mainoo, new signing Ederson, Mason Mount, and Tyler Fletcher. Given that the club faces a 60-plus-game campaign, a further addition makes sense. Fletcher's emergence from the academy last season was timely, but recruiting another experienced midfielder would provide vital depth.
United might explore signing an affordable third midfielder with top-flight experience who would not stretch finances—potentially a player in the latter stages of their career. Such a signing would sit at the lower end of the midfield hierarchy, but finding a player with the right character and willingness to embrace that role is a significant challenge. Additionally, United must exercise caution with their transfer budget, meaning any permanent deal would need to be economical.
Alternatively, the club could turn to the loan market, though temporary signings come with their own risks. United have had mixed results with loans in the past: Odion Ighalo proved reasonably successful, Marcel Sabitzer performed adequately, while Wout Weghorst's spell was forgettable. Sofyan Amrabat delivered little beyond an outstanding FA Cup final performance in 2024, and Sergio Reguilon's loan was a futile acquisition. Relying on the loan market is far from ideal, but it may be a necessary temporary solution.
