Manchester United may need to pay a higher fee for Aurelien Tchouameni after the midfielder agreed to a three-year contract extension with Real Madrid. The La Liga club tied down the Frenchman when they thought Manchester City's Rodri was unavailable, putting them in a strong position for any transfer negotiations.
Contract Extension Strengthens Real Madrid's Hand
Real Madrid improved Tchouameni's salary to prevent losing him cheaply or on a free transfer, according to reports. If the Spanish side wants to spend big for Jose Mourinho, they would need to make a significant sale. With reports suggesting Real Madrid believe Rodri is available, a Tchouameni exit could be possible.
United's Background Checks and Needs
Manchester United conducted background checks on Tchouameni several months ago and are keen on a deal if he becomes available. However, they first need help from local rivals Manchester City, who remain reluctant to part with Rodri. United boss Michael Carrick has already added two central midfielders this summer: Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, joining Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and Mason Mount.
"There were good signs from Andrey on his first one. He's getting in the rhythm and feel of it again, so it was good to see him in a red shirt," Carrick said after Santos's pre-season debut against Wrexham.
Rodri's Situation and Other Targets
City manager Enzo Maresca said Rodri would "be back with us" and was not concerned by transfer speculation. The World Cup winner has been offered new terms ahead of his contract expiring next summer. Following Bernardo Silva's departure, City signed Elliot Anderson for £116 million and hold interest in Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi. It remains unclear how that impacts Rodri's future.
A pursuit of Tchouameni could also be hindered if Vinicius Junior transfers to Arsenal. Real Madrid have yet to finalize a new contract for the winger, and Arsenal are willing to make a substantial offer, meaning Los Blancos may not need a second major sale. United have also been linked with Roma and France midfielder Manu Kone, Bournemouth's Alex Scott, and Brighton's Alex Scott.
