Sunderland are reportedly in discussions with Turkish Super Lig side Eyüpspor over a potential move for striker Ahmed Abdullahi.
It is understood talks have been ongoing regarding the 22-year-old, who was not included in Régis Le Bris’ first-team squad for Saturday’s 5-1 pre-season victory over York City. Abdullahi instead featured for Sunderland’s U21 side against South Shields, which perhaps indicated where he ranks in Sunderland’s striker options.
Background and Injury Struggles
The Nigerian forward joined Sunderland from Belgian side Gent in August 2024, signing a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light. However, a succession of injury problems has prevented him from making a competitive senior appearance for the Black Cats.
Abdullahi had previously attracted interest from several major European clubs. He spent time on trial with Marseille and Borussia Dortmund in 2021 before eventually joining Gent. The striker has also represented Nigeria at U20 level and was selected for the 2023 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.
Limited First-Team Pathway
Abdullahi’s first-team pathway at Sunderland currently appears limited, with Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor among the senior options ahead of him in Le Bris’ squad. Young striker Trey Ogunsuyi has also been involved during pre-season, while Sunderland’s additional Premier League, domestic cup and European fixtures could create opportunities across the wider squad.
A move to Eyüpspor could offer Abdullahi the opportunity to secure regular senior football after a frustrating spell on Wearside.
