Departing Prime Minister Keir Starmer was handed one last humiliation on GB News, days before he leaves Downing Street for good. Anchors Ellie Costello and Alex Armstrong were joined by former newspaper editor David Wooding and The Spectator editor Tali Fraser to discuss the news that the PM could attend the World Cup final as his “final freebie”.
GB News Anchors Mock Starmer's Timing
Costello asked Wooding: “Please can we look at The Times page three, and what is the prime minister’s last act going to be?” as he replied: “Well, it’s going to be going to the World Cup final if England do the business tomorrow against Argentina!” Both Costello and Armstrong weren’t impressed, chiming in: “He’s timed that well, hasn’t he?” and “a final freebie!”
Wooding Suggests Starmer Might Delay Resignation
Wooding went on: “Do you know what I reckon he’ll do? Because he’s supposed to be resigning on Monday morning, and then Andy Burnham going to see the King an hour or so later. If I were Keir Starmer at the World Cup final and England won the World Cup, I’d say, ‘Well, we’re overnighting, I can’t go and see the King Monday, I’m going to put it off until Wednesday’. Then I’d come back and invite the England team round on the Tuesday night to celebrate in No 10 and leave Andy Burnham out of the event!”
Fraser Notes Starmer's Winning Record
Fraser commented: “There is one good record for Sir Keir Starmer, which is that England have won 76% of their international games since he came to power. So at least there’s one thing that if they win, if they manage to win the World Cup and it’s the last act of Starmer’s thing to be there, that’s at least one nice way for him to go out.”
But Armstrong wasn’t having it as he fumed: “He can’t take any credit for this! I’m sure he’ll try to, but…”
