Spanish media have questioned Barcelona's decision to sign Anthony Gordon for £69.3 million instead of Marcus Rashford, who was available for less than half that sum. Gordon, who transferred from Newcastle United to Barcelona before the World Cup, has struggled to make an impact in the tournament, prompting scrutiny from Spanish outlets.
Gordon's World Cup Struggles
The 25-year-old was selected ahead of Rashford for England's Group L opener against Croatia but proved ineffective, while Rashford came off the bench to score the match-sealing fourth goal. Manager Thomas Tuchel kept faith in Gordon for the draw with Ghana, but he again failed to influence the game and was dropped for the group finale against Panama, with Rashford starting instead. After not coming off the bench, Gordon was reluctant to face the media.
Spanish Media Criticism
Spanish publication ABC observed that Gordon "ran down the corridor of the mixed zone with the press faster than his attacks on the wing in this World Cup matches." The report suggested Barca supporters would be "watching with concern what is happening on England's left wing during this World Cup" and questioned why Rashford, who helped Barcelona win La Liga during his loan spell, was not signed instead. ABC noted that Barca had "paid a fortune" for Gordon "despite the club's financial struggles."
Pressure on Gordon
The piece highlighted the "immense pressure" Gordon faces due to "the weight of his transfer fee, the challenge of joining a European giant, the scrutiny of the global stage, and constant comparisons to the player who owns the opposite flank at Barca, Lamine Yamal." It added, "Being measured against one of the world's best is arguably unfair. Yet, it is to be expected when a club has just staked 80 million euros on you."
Further Criticism
Gordon also faced criticism from other Spanish media after earlier matches. El Periodico described him as "virtually invisible" in the Croatia victory, while La Vanguardia labelled him "subdued," though his defensive contributions received some recognition. It would be surprising if Gordon starts against Congo, while Rashford, despite plenty of possession, failed to shine against Panama. Tuchel could opt for Eberechi Eze or Morgan Rogers on the left side.
