Britons are being urged to check their change for a seemingly ordinary 20p coin that could be worth up to £60 due to a minting error. According to an expert known as Coin Collector UK, a number of 20p pieces from 2008 were accidentally minted without a date, making them highly sought after by collectors.
The error coins appear normal at first glance, but upon closer inspection, the date is missing from the head side. The expert explained on TikTok that the error occurred when the Royal Mint changed the 20p design from the Tudor rose to the shield in 2008. The old design had the date on the front, so the new shield coins were mistakenly struck with the old obverse die, resulting in a mule error with no date.
It is estimated that between 50,000 and 250,000 of these undated 20p coins entered circulation. The expert noted that they typically sell for £50 to £60, with some listings on eBay reaching £100 or £120. Collectors are advised to check the bottom of the shield design on the reverse side for the absence of a date.
