Newcastle United confirmed the signing of Ivorian winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim on Sunday evening for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £43 million. The 20-year-old becomes the Magpies' first outfield signing of the summer, joining on a long-term contract.
Toure impressed in his first full Bundesliga season, scoring five goals and providing 12 assists, helping Hoffenheim qualify for European competition. Sporting director Ross Wilson played a key role in securing the transfer.
Wilson's Statement Highlights Strong Club Relationship
Wilson's comments following the announcement underscored the enduring bond between the two clubs. "Finally, I'd like to thank TSG Hoffenheim for their professionalism in all of our discussions and for the care they've shown him. I know they share our excitement in Bazoumana's quality and potential," Wilson said.
The relationship dates back to 2019 when Newcastle signed Joelinton from Hoffenheim for a then-club-record £40 million fee. Joelinton initially struggled as a forward but reinvented himself as a midfielder, becoming a key player for the Magpies.
Hoffenheim's DNA: Developing Talent for Elite Clubs
Hoffenheim's own club statement highlighted that Toure's sale, a club record, reflects their 'DNA' of developing top talent for 'elite clubs' like Newcastle. Sporting director Andreas Schicker said: "Bazou has developed exceptionally well since arriving from Sweden in February 2025 – and the coaching team led by Chris Ilzer has played a major part in that. His performances were instrumental in the club’s second-best season in its history."
Schicker added: "Of course, we would have loved to see Bazou remain in our ranks. However, it is in keeping with TSG’s DNA and the path we have chosen to sign highly promising talents, develop them systematically alongside our coaching team, and enable them to make the move to elite clubs. We wish Bazou all the very best and every success for his future career and the challenge ahead in the Premier League."
Future Transfers Between Clubs Likely
Wilson's praise for Hoffenheim's professionalism and the smooth conduct of negotiations suggest Newcastle may return to the Rhein-Neckar-Arena for future signings. The Magpies hope Toure can emulate Joelinton's eventual success, though they will aim for a faster impact.
