Newcastle United have completed several notable record transfers during the Premier League era, including deals for a Ballon d'Or winner, a 289-goal forward, and a local hero. Manager Eddie Howe is aiming to make statement signings this summer after an eventful window that saw Anthony Gordon sold to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali nearing a move away. The club has brought in goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen but missed out on Liverpool winger Victor Munoz. Newcastle are now targeting Hoffenheim's Bazoumana Toure and World Cup star Johan Manzambi as Howe looks to revamp his squad and push for Champions League qualification.
Michael Owen: A Regretted Record Deal
Michael Owen signed for Newcastle in a club-record £16.8 million move from Real Madrid in August 2005. The former Ballon d'Or winner returned to the Premier League after a year in Spain, having scored 118 goals in 216 league games for boyhood club Liverpool. Owen scored twice in his first three games for Newcastle, but his debut season was blighted by injuries, a theme that persisted throughout his time at the club. He missed most of the next season after a serious injury at the 2006 World Cup. Upon returning, Owen was given the captaincy under Kevin Keegan and rediscovered form, scoring nine goals in 16 appearances to help avoid relegation. However, his eight league goals the following season could not prevent Newcastle from being relegated. Owen left at the end of his contract in 2009, later playing for Manchester United and Stoke City. In his 2019 autobiography Reboot, Owen said: 'My move to Newcastle was one I really regret - I should have followed my gut instincts from the start. I didn't want to go there - my heart was still set on a return to Liverpool.'
Andy Cole: A Prolific but Brief Spell
Andy Cole was signed by Kevin Keegan for a club-record £1.75 million from Bristol City in February 1993. The striker made an immediate impact, scoring 12 goals in 12 appearances to boost Newcastle's promotion hopes. In the Premier League, Cole formed a devastating partnership with Peter Beardsley, netting 34 goals in 40 top-flight games. However, his time at Newcastle lasted under two years before Manchester United paid a British record fee to take him to Old Trafford in January 1995. Cole scored 68 goals in 84 games for Newcastle and went on to win three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and other trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson. He finished his career with 289 goals.
Alan Shearer: The World Record Signing
Newcastle shocked the football world with a world-record £15 million deal for Alan Shearer in July 1996. The fee eclipsed the £13.2 million Barcelona paid for Ronaldo earlier that month. Shearer, a Newcastle fan, had won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and was a two-time Golden Boot winner. He continued his prolific form at his boyhood club, breaking Jackie Milburn's all-time Newcastle scoring record in his final season. Shearer ended with 206 goals in 405 games before retiring in 2006. He remains the Premier League's all-time top scorer with 260 goals.
