Napoli are set to offer Scott McTominay a new contract until 2030, making him one of the club's highest-paid players, according to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport. The Scottish midfielder, who joined from Manchester United in 2024, has two years remaining on his current deal and has attracted interest from other clubs.
Contract Extension Plans
The proposed extension would see McTominay receive a considerable wage increase, elevating him to the top earners at Napoli. Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has reportedly instructed director Giovanni Manna to initiate formal talks with the player's representatives. This move comes despite the departure of former manager Antonio Conte and the appointment of Max Allegri.
Player's Happiness in Naples
McTominay, 29, has expressed his contentment in Italy. Speaking last year, he said: "I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player. It is all I think about. The future is very important, and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time. I love this place. Difficulties have been minimal, my family is happy and I'm happy."
Club's Concerns
Despite the extension plans, Napoli chief Leonardo Giammarioli admitted in February that he was worried about retaining McTominay. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "Yeah, of course I'm worried. But ultimately, especially Scott, who's a very nice guy, we're happy if he gets to the next level in a couple of years – maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it." He added: "Look at Stuttgart, they wanted to keep Nick Woltemade, but when such an offer comes in, there's not much you can do, when the player wants to go and money is important."
Serie A's Financial Challenges
Giammarioli also highlighted the difficulties Serie A faces in competing with other top leagues: "It's a bit complicated for Serie A and our competitive clubs…the league is still making losses in revenue. Of course, it's hard to keep up with the other big four leagues, but we're trying to improve and be competitive. Keeping players is difficult, it wasn't easy to get them, it's even harder to keep them. We need to be smart about our signings…every bit of money we spend must count."
McTominay's Napoli Record
Since his move, McTominay has made 80 appearances for Napoli in all competitions, scoring 27 goals. His performances have been instrumental in the club's campaigns over the past two seasons.
