Matt Ritchie Retires, Joins Bournemouth as Technical Director

Former Newcastle United and Scotland international Matt Ritchie has announced his retirement from professional football and has immediately taken on a new role as technical director at AFC Bournemouth, one of his former clubs.

The 36-year-old, who made 142 appearances for the Cherries between 2013 and 2016, returns to the Vitality Stadium in a senior leadership position. He will work closely with Tiago Pinto on transfers and form a key part of Marco Rose's backroom team.

Ritchie was a popular figure at Newcastle United, signed by Rafa Benitez and known for his passionate displays. He was also one of Eddie Howe's trusted dressing room figures. After leaving Newcastle two years ago, he had spells at Portsmouth and Reading before deciding to hang up his boots.

A Bournemouth statement said: "We are delighted to announce the appointment of Matt Ritchie as the club's new Technical Director. Ritchie returns to Vitality Stadium in a senior leadership role following an outstanding playing career spanning 17 years, which saw him compete in the Champions League, Premier League, and English Football League."

Ritchie commented: "AFC Bournemouth has always meant a huge amount to me, so to return in this capacity is incredibly special. I've spent a long time preparing for what's next after playing, learning from experienced people and developing my understanding of the technical and strategic side of football. Now I've met Marco, I'm even more excited about what is to come. It's a fantastic opportunity and I can't wait to begin working with the staff, players, and ownership group as we continue building for the future. I'd like to thank Bill, Ryan, and Tiago for the opportunity and belief they've shown in me."

Ritchie's appointment marks a new chapter for the former winger, who will now focus on shaping the club's transfer strategy and long-term vision.
