Manchester United are facing a crucial transfer window as manager Michael Carrick aims to build on his early success at Old Trafford. After finishing third last season, United are set to return to the Champions League and need to strengthen their squad, particularly in midfield, to replace the outgoing Casemiro.
Fernandes Transfer Twist: Spurs Offer Higher Wages
United have been linked with West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, but now face a potential twist. According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to offer higher wages than United for the Portugal international, who is valued at £80 million by West Ham. Spurs finished 17th last season under Roberto De Zerbi but are willing to pay bigger salaries for their marquee targets.
United can offer Fernandes the chance to play in the Champions League, which Tottenham cannot. However, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham's willingness to pay higher wages will impact United's transfer plans. Southampton, who sold Fernandes to West Ham for £38 million last year, are set to receive 15 per cent of any future transfer fee. Fernandes scored three goals and provided four assists in 36 league games last season but could not prevent West Ham from being relegated.
Andre Onana Nears Exit
Goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly close to leaving Manchester United. The 30-year-old, who joined from Inter Milan in 2023, spent last season on loan at Trabzonspor. Turkish outlet A Spor claims that Onana has accepted all of Trabzonspor's financial demands and is set to return to the Turkish club on another loan deal. Onana lost his place as United's first-choice goalkeeper last term to new signing Senne Lammens. He made 33 appearances for Trabzonspor and won the Turkish Cup during his loan spell.
Other Transfer Targets
United are also linked with Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali as they look to bolster their midfield options. Brazilian midfielder Ederson is set to join from Atalanta after an early deal was struck for the 26-year-old.
