Lloyds to Close 59 Branches in 2026 Including North East Sites

Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed that 59 branches across the UK will shut their doors in 2026, with two locations in the North East—South Shields and Wallsend—on the closure list. Customers are urged to prepare for the changes as the banking sector continues its shift toward digital services.

North East Branches Affected

The South Shields branch is scheduled to close on 12 October 2026, while the Wallsend branch will shut on 3 November 2026. These closures are part of a broader trend that has seen Lloyds reduce its physical footprint significantly over the past decade.

Background on Closures

According to consumer group Which?, Lloyds Banking Group has closed more than 1,547 branches between 2015 and June 2026. The latest wave of closures reflects changing customer habits, with more people using online and mobile banking. The bank noted that over three-quarters of affected branches are within one mile of another Lloyds branch, and 95% have an alternative branch within five miles. Customers can also use branches across the group's brands—for example, Halifax customers can perform everyday transactions at Lloyds Bank branches and vice versa.

A Lloyds spokesperson stated: "With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our Community Bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before."

Industry-Wide Trend

Lloyds is not alone in reducing its physical network. Which? estimates that around 6,693 bank branches closed across the UK between January 2015 and January 2026, with major high street names such as Santander, Barclays, and NatWest also announcing significant closures. Campaigners have raised concerns that ongoing closures could leave elderly customers, small businesses, and rural communities with fewer face-to-face banking options, despite the expansion of digital services and alternative banking hubs.

Halifax Brand Future

Earlier this year, reports emerged that Lloyds Banking Group was considering phasing out the Halifax brand, which could mark the end of the 173-year-old name. However, a Lloyds spokeswoman clarified: "We regularly look at the role our brands play in supporting our customers. Our banking customers can already use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, and see any of their products and services in any of their apps – there are no changes for our customers today." No final decision has been announced.
