Liverpool's pursuit of RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande has encountered significant obstacles, with the German club adamant that the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international will not be leaving this summer. The Reds have placed Diomande near the top of their transfer wish-list and are prepared to compete with European heavyweights PSG for his signature. However, Leipzig's chiefs are ready to reject lucrative offers after securing Champions League qualification for next season.
Diomande's Value and Legal Dispute
Diomande, who is valued at around £85 million, is also at the centre of a legal dispute. The forward signed with Jay-Z's agency Roc Nation Sports in February, but rival company Maxidel, owned by ex-Leeds player Max Gradel, claims Diomande is still contractually bound to them. The Court of Arbitration for Sport is now investigating the matter, which could further complicate any potential transfer.
Impact on Arsenal's Transfer Plans
The situation could also affect Arsenal's pursuit of PSG winger Bradley Barcola. PSG are prepared to consider offers for Barcola, who has two years left on his contract, but only if they can secure Diomande as a replacement. With Leipzig unwilling to sell, PSG may be less inclined to part with Barcola, leaving Arsenal's plans in limbo.
Manchester United had also shown interest in Diomande, but their focus has shifted to a midfield overhaul under Michael Carrick. Leipzig, historically a selling club, are under less financial pressure this year after securing European football, unlike last summer when they sold Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons. They are also working to extend Diomande's contract, which already runs until 2030, and the player himself has stated his intention to remain at Leipzig next season.
Diomande's Rise and Potential
Diomande joined Leipzig for around £17.3 million from CD Leganes last July and has impressed with 13 goals and 10 assists in all competitions, winning the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Year award. Despite his talent, some question whether Liverpool will commit top money for a relatively raw prospect who was playing college football in Florida as recently as 2024. The experience of Florian Wirtz, who struggled to adapt to the Premier League after a £116.5 million move, may also give Liverpool pause.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Liverpool's pursuit of Diomande remains complicated, with implications for multiple clubs and players across Europe.
