Liverpool have seen three key recruitment figures depart the club in recent days, with sporting director Richard Hughes leaving for Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, alongside Mark Burchill and Craig McKee.
Andoni Iraola is set to take charge of his first Champions League match as Liverpool head coach when the Reds host Atletico Madrid in their opening European fixture of the season this week. The Spanish boss is buoyed by their 2-0 win over Ipswich last Friday, with Alexander Isak looking back to his best.
Two further departures confirmed
While Al-Hilal have officially announced Hughes' appointment, Burchill and McKee, who joined Liverpool alongside Hughes during the summer of 2024, have also made the move to the Saudi-based club. The pair had worked closely with chief scout Barry Hunter within the recruitment department, overseeing the club's transfer activity throughout the 2025 and 2026 transfer windows.
At Al-Hilal, Burchill will take on the role of director of recruitment, while McKee will assume the position of director of scouting. Official confirmation of Hughes' move came just one day after it emerged that he would be departing his post at Anfield, having joined from Bournemouth two seasons prior.
Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon is leading the search to find a replacement sporting director.
In a statement published on their official website on Sunday evening, Al-Hilal said: "The appointment of Hughes came as part of Al-Hilal's efforts to strengthen its football system and develop its sporting structure with specialised expertise."
"This will contribute to raising the quality of technical work, developing recruitment and scouting processes, and enhancing integration across all aspects related to the football sector."
Concern over summer transfer raised
Liverpool may have early cause for concern regarding Ifeanyi Ndukwe's loan spell at Levante, with the promising young defender yet to feature in a single match. The 18-year-old completed a move to La Liga during the summer transfer window in a bid to gain valuable first-team experience, as well as securing eligibility for a work permit.
The centre-back caught the eye during Liverpool's pre-season campaign, starting every fixture. However, across all three matches of his loan spell to date, Ndukwe has remained an unused substitute, with Adrian Dela and Aissa Mandi favoured ahead of him.
Ndukwe's loan was effectively imposed upon the Reds, as the club were unable to obtain a work permit for the defender due to his lack of top-tier experience. Work permits are issued through a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE), which requires the player to accumulate sufficient points to feature in specific competitions.
Ndukwe will qualify for a GBE once he makes one starting appearance in La Liga. Liverpool also have a potential break clause within the loan arrangement, allowing him to rejoin the club in January, should he accumulate the necessary points total.
Nevertheless, early indications suggest opportunities for the young talent may prove difficult to secure. Put simply, should he fail to obtain the necessary playing time, the loan will have been a rather fruitless exercise for both player and club.
