Liverpool's Summer Transfer Woes
New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has suffered a significant double blow in his quest to replace club legend Mohamed Salah. The Reds had identified RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola as prime targets to bolster their wide options, but both deals have hit major obstacles.
Iraola had already secured his first signing of the summer, bringing in Osasuna winger Victor Munoz. However, the need for a top-tier replacement for Salah remains urgent as Liverpool prepares for the post-Salah era.
Yan Diomande 'Expects to Leave' RB Leipzig
Nineteen-year-old Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande has admitted he anticipates departing RB Leipzig this summer. The winger, valued at £112m by the German club, revealed his expectations ahead of the World Cup round of 32 clash against Norway.
“First of all, like I said, my dream is playing for my country and making history with my country,” Diomande said. “I don't have Instagram anymore, I don't have TikTok, so I can't see anything but I expect to leave [RB Leipzig] of course. I have an agent who's going to manage the rest, but for me the most important thing right now is focusing on the World Cup with my country and making history with them.”
Diomande joined Leipzig from Leganes last summer and enjoyed a remarkable debut season, scoring 13 goals and providing 10 assists in 36 appearances. Liverpool reportedly had an £86.7m offer rejected earlier this month, with Leipzig holding out for a fee closer to £112m. However, the teenager reportedly prefers a move to PSG over Liverpool.
PSG Rule Out Bradley Barcola Sale
Paris Saint-Germain have made it clear that Bradley Barcola is not for sale, despite persistent links with Liverpool. The 23-year-old winger, who helped PSG win Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season, has two years remaining on his contract.
According to The Athletic, PSG are under no pressure to sell Barcola, who scored 13 goals and provided seven assists last term. The French club values him at over £116m, a figure comparable to the fee Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson. Barcola is reportedly hesitant to sign a new contract due to concerns over playing time, but PSG remain firm on keeping him. He joined PSG from Lyon in 2023.
Impact on Liverpool's Transfer Plans
The double setback leaves Iraola with limited options as the transfer window progresses. With Diomande leaning towards PSG and Barcola off the market, Liverpool may need to explore alternative targets to fill the void left by Salah. The club's pursuit of a wide attacker has been a priority, and the failure to land either player could force a shift in strategy.
