Stanley-based contractor Hodgson Sayers has been acquired by United Infrastructure for an undisclosed sum, in a deal designed to support its next phase of growth. The company, which won UK Business of the Year at the British Chamber Awards after triumphing at the 2015 Journal-backed North East Business Awards, will join the group to strengthen its offering across the power and social infrastructure sectors.

Established contractor with national reach

Founded in 1979, Hodgson Sayers has grown into a specialist contractor providing roofing, building fabric, construction and civil engineering services to clients across the UK. The business, which also operates a site in Nottingham, works across sectors including power, social housing and education, and has a long-standing relationship with Northern Powergrid, having recently secured contracts with National Grid.

Under chairman and founder Billy Hodgson and managing director John Sayers, the company employed 102 staff and operatives in its 2025 financial year. Turnover in accounts filed for Hodgson Sayers Ltd grew from £11.53m in 2021 to £15.4m in 2025, boosted by increasing demand across its roofing and civils divisions.

Strategic fit for United Infrastructure

Through the acquisition, United Infrastructure will bring Hodgson Sayers' specialist roofing and building-envelope capabilities into the group. Billy Hodgson said the sale was an important decision and that the right advisers made a real difference throughout the process.

Neil Armstrong, chairman and CEO of United Infrastructure, said the acquisition adds valuable roofing and building-fabric expertise to the group's growing power and social infrastructure capability.
