Jordan Henderson is reportedly on the verge of a shock move from Brentford to Chelsea, a transfer that would directly contradict his earlier insistence that he left Liverpool to avoid a bit-part role. The 36-year-old midfielder’s career has taken several unexpected turns since his departure from Anfield in 2023.
Henderson’s Initial Exit from Liverpool
Henderson’s sudden move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in 2023 was met with disappointment from Liverpool supporters for multiple reasons. Many fans were unhappy with the moral implications of relocating to a country where homosexuality is illegal and same-sex couples face severe discrimination, especially after his years of advocacy for the LGBT community. Additionally, the manner of his departure – leaving as club captain without a proper farewell – was seen as inappropriate.
His exit was particularly surprising given his previous determination to fight for his place when Brendan Rodgers considered selling him. However, under Jurgen Klopp, with a midfield overhaul underway, that same motivation appeared to wane.

Reports suggest Henderson is not expected to feature heavily or make a significant on-pitch impact, given Chelsea’s ambitions for silverware. He will likely spend most of his time on the bench, a role he explicitly said he did not want at Liverpool.
