Good Morning Britain Issues Energy Price Warning Ahead of July Cap Rise
GMB Warns of Energy Price Cap Rise to £1,862

Good Morning Britain's Political Correspondent Louisa Jameson delivered a stark warning about rising energy prices on the ITV morning show, as the new price cap takes effect on July 1. Speaking to hosts Ranvir Singh and Ed Balls, Jameson highlighted the political uncertainty surrounding future support for households.

Political Uncertainty and Leadership Changes

Jameson explained that while the chancellor had previously hinted at more help in the autumn, recent events make it unlikely she will remain in office. Attention is turning to Andy Burnham, who is expected to become prime minister in under three weeks. Both the Conservatives and the Greens are setting out plans to lower energy bills, and Burnham hinted at action in a speech on Monday, saying, "I will seek to give Britain some breathing space as soon as I can."

However, Jameson noted that the country's finances are tight, and Keir Starmer's parting gift is a £5 billion black hole in defence spending plans that the new prime minister will have to address in his first budget.

Practical Advice for Viewers

Finance journalist Holly Mead offered practical tips to help viewers reduce their energy bills. She pointed out that energy bills are now about 79% higher than in the winter of 2020 before the energy crisis began. Mead advised: "Make sure your radiators are bled. When the heatwave is over, turn the thermostat down by one degree. Turn those devices off on standby. Unplug things at the wall. These really little simple steps do start to add up and make a difference to your overall bill."

New Price Cap Details

The price cap for July 1 to September 30 is set at £1,862 per year, a 13% increase from the previous cap of £1,641. The rise is attributed to US-Israeli strikes on Iran and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz, along with strikes on various Gulf states.
