General Motors is recalling more than 270,000 Chevrolet Malibu cars in the United States because of a rearview camera fault that can cause a distorted or blank display. The issue affects models from 2023 to 2025.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a malfunctioning rearview image significantly increases the risk of a collision as it impairs the driver's view behind the vehicle. A safety recall report revealed that GM's supplier identified a flaw in the bonding process for the camera housing, which, combined with the mounting configuration, could allow moisture to enter the unit.
General Motors has stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to the defect. Owners of affected vehicles will receive a free replacement of the rearview camera at authorised dealerships. Notification letters are scheduled to be sent from 18 May.
