Alejandro Garnacho could be set to hand Manchester United a transfer windfall, as Roma accelerate talks to sign the winger from Chelsea. The Argentine, who left Old Trafford for £40m last summer, is now surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, and a move to Serie A could trigger a sell-on clause worth £4.3m to the Red Devils.
Garnacho's Struggles at Chelsea
Garnacho, 22, managed one goal and four assists in 24 Premier League appearances last season but was often benched due to stiff competition. Despite being under contract until 2032, Chelsea are willing to listen to permanent offers for the forward. He was absent from pre-season training last week, prompting manager Xabi Alonso to address his future.
“We have spoken with the sports directors, and there is an interest from him, from other clubs, so let's see how it develops,” Alonso said at his first press conference in West London. Chelsea are not interested in a loan deal, valuing Garnacho at around £43m.
Roma's Plan to Fund the Move
Roma initially considered a loan but now plan to restructure their attack to raise funds. They are accelerating talks with Sunderland AFC over the sale of winger Matias Soule, which would provide both financial room and squad space to pursue Garnacho. The Serie A club are expected to meet Chelsea's valuation.
Man United's Financial Boost
Manchester United are entitled to a 10% sell-on clause from Garnacho's sale. A £43m deal would net the Reds £4.3m, which could be used for transfer fees or salaries. This follows a £38m windfall from Mason Greenwood's move to Fenerbahce this week.
United have already made significant progress in the transfer window, completing a £48m move for Chelsea's Andrey Santos and a £35m deal for Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans. Karl Darlow also joined as a free agent to serve as backup goalkeeper.
