DP World, the global logistics and transport conglomerate that owns P&O Ferries, has ousted its chairman following the disclosure of disturbing email exchanges with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Dubai-based company, which also manages significant container ports in London and Southampton, confirmed the immediate departure of Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem from his leadership role.
Leadership Shakeup Amid Intense Pressure
While DP World did not explicitly name Sulayem in its official announcement, the company stated that Essa Kazim would now assume the position of chairman. Additionally, Yuvraj Narayan has been appointed as the new group chief executive officer, charged with steering the company's strategic direction moving forward. This leadership overhaul comes after DP World faced mounting pressure regarding Sulayem's future following the publication of fresh Epstein-related files by the US justice department.
Disturbing Email Exchanges Revealed
The published correspondence includes an April 2009 email from Epstein to Sulayem that read: "where are you? are you ok , I loved the torture video." Sulayem responded: "I am in china I will be in the US 2nd week of may." Further messages from 2007 show Sulayem emailing Epstein about his attempts to meet a supermodel, writing: "After several attemps for several months we managed to meet in NY. there is a missunderstanding she she wanted some BUSINESS! while i only wanted some P****NESS!"
According to additional files obtained by Bloomberg, Sulayem suggested visiting Epstein with his family in 2015 and sent links to fetish porn websites. Other emails contained messages from Sulayem describing women with detailed physical characteristics including age, weight, height and bra size.
Business Repercussions and Corporate Response
The revelations prompted serious business consequences, with some of DP World's largest international partners reportedly threatening to halt future collaborations. The British International Investment development finance operation was among those reconsidering their relationship with the logistics giant. On Friday, DP World stated: "DP World affirmed that the new appointments support its strategy for sustainable growth and reinforce its role in strengthening global supply chains and supporting Dubai's position as a leading hub for trade and logistics."
Historical Controversy and Ongoing Scrutiny
This is not the first time DP World has faced significant criticism in the United Kingdom. In 2022, the company drew condemnation from British MPs and unions when its P&O Ferries subsidiary abruptly sacked 800 staff members, replacing them with cheaper agency workers. The latest scandal involving Epstein communications adds another layer of controversy to the company's operations.
Jeffrey Epstein died in jail in 2019 while facing charges of sex trafficking. The ongoing release of documents related to his associates continues to create ripple effects across various sectors, with DP World becoming the latest corporation forced to address connections to the disgraced financier.
