DP World Chairman Replaced Following Jeffrey Epstein Email Revelations
Dubai has announced a significant leadership change at DP World, one of the globe's foremost logistics companies, replacing its longstanding chairman after emails surfaced linking him to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The government's Dubai Media Office confirmed the appointment of Essa Kazim as the new chairman and Yuvraj Narayan as group CEO, positions previously held by Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, though his name was not explicitly mentioned in the announcement.
Corporate Fallout from Epstein Documents
This leadership reshuffle comes just one day after financial institutions in Canada and the United Kingdom declared they would pause future ventures with DP World. The decision followed the release of emails by the U.S. Department of Justice, which revealed a years-long friendship between bin Sulayem and Epstein. These emails, part of a broader cache of Epstein-related documents, included discussions referencing porn, sexual massages, and escorts, though they do not appear to implicate bin Sulayem in Epstein's alleged crimes. Epstein died by suicide in jail in 2019 after facing charges of sex trafficking.
DP World, a logistics behemoth that operates the Jebel Ali port in Dubai and terminals worldwide, has long been a cornerstone of the Middle Eastern city's economy. The company did not respond to requests for comment regarding the email revelations or the leadership change.
Details of the Email Exchanges
The emails between Epstein and bin Sulayem, spanning from 2013 to 2018, covered a wide array of topics, including President Donald Trump, sex, and theology. In a 2013 email, Epstein expressed deep trust in bin Sulayem, writing, "you are one of my most trusted friends in very sense of the word, you have never let me down." Bin Sulayem responded with, "Thank you my friend I am off the sample a fresh 100% female Russian at my yacht."
Further exchanges included bin Sulayem sending Epstein a menu from a massage business with sexual offerings in 2013, a link to a porn site in 2015, and Epstein reciprocating with an escort website link in 2017. In 2018, Epstein also emailed bin Sulayem about Steve Bannon, a Trump acolyte, suggesting, "you will like him," and bin Sulayem inquired about an event potentially attended by Trump.
Broader Implications and Additional Appointments
Bin Sulayem previously held a more extensive role as chairman of the Dubai World conglomerate, which included Nakheel, the property developer behind Dubai's iconic palm tree-shaped and world map-inspired artificial islands. These projects helped solidify Dubai's reputation as an emerging global city. In a related move, the state-run WAM news agency reported that Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, appointed a new head for the Ports Customs and Free Zone Corporation, another position formerly held by bin Sulayem.
The email exchanges, like others in the Epstein files, contained typographical errors, but their content has prompted swift corporate and governmental action, highlighting the ongoing repercussions of the Epstein scandal on global business and leadership.
