Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has been tipped to join Chelsea in the summer transfer window, with ex-Blues defender Marcel Desailly explaining why the move would be ideal for the Uruguayan.
Nunez's Liverpool stint and Saudi move
Nunez spent three seasons at Liverpool after joining from Benfica in 2022, scoring 40 goals in 143 appearances before leaving last summer. He moved to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal in a deal worth £46.3 million. However, his time in Saudi Arabia has been marked by speculation after he was omitted from the club's registered squad for the second half of the season.
Desailly's verdict on Nunez to Chelsea
Speaking to Betway, Desailly said: “A player who could suit the profile is former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez. If you give him the confidence and belief, he will not feel shy because the people in the system are a higher grade than him. That is what happened to him at Liverpool. There were too many players higher grade than him, so he couldn’t express himself. At Chelsea, I’m sure he would express himself and perform.”
Desailly added that Chelsea need a striker but are unsure where to find one, possibly looking to Germany for an unknown talent who matches their profile.
Chelsea's summer plans and Liverpool's forward line
Chelsea, under new boss Xabi Alonso, face a busy summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Liverpool are preparing for Mohamed Salah's departure and have Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, and Rio Ngumoha as their only recognised forwards, with Hugo Ekitike out long-term with an Achilles injury.
It remains to be seen where Nunez will play next season, but a return to the Premier League with Chelsea could be on the cards.
