French food and drink giant Danone has agreed to purchase British meal replacement company Huel, a move set to significantly bolster its presence in the functional nutrition sector. The deal, announced on Monday 23 March 2026, marks a strategic expansion for Danone as it seeks to capitalise on the growing demand for convenient, nutritionally complete food products.

Huel's Rapid Growth and Product Range

Hertfordshire-based Huel was founded by Julian Hearn in 2015 with the mission of providing nutritionally complete food aimed at reducing meal preparation times while ensuring essential nutrient intake. Over the years, the brand has experienced rapid growth, evolving from a direct-to-consumer model into an omnichannel business. Its product range now includes powders, snack bars, and drinks, which have expanded into retail stores across various markets.

James McMaster, Huel's chief executive, highlighted the company's achievements, stating, "We've grown into an omnichannel business with a strong direct-to-consumer foundation, an expanding international footprint, and a retail business that's scaling quickly." He expressed optimism about the acquisition, noting that Danone's infrastructure, distribution networks, and research and development capabilities would enable Huel to reach new markets and more consumers as demand for convenient nutrition continues to rise.

Strategic Implications and Financial Details

The acquisition is subject to closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, but is expected to accelerate Huel's growth ambitions and drive its international expansion. While the exact value of the deal has not been disclosed by the companies, the Financial Times has valued Huel at approximately one billion euros, equivalent to around £870 million. This valuation underscores the significant market position Huel has built in less than a decade.
