Jeremy Clarkson has announced a temporary closure of the butcher counter at his Oxfordshire pub, The Farmer's Dog, and banned dogs from the premises due to extreme heat. The former Top Gear host took to Instagram on Tuesday (June 23) to share the update as the UK braces for its hottest June day on record, with temperatures forecast to exceed 35°C.
Heatwave Forces Partial Closure
Clarkson posted a photo of The Farmer's Dog with a hot weather reminder sign outside, stating that the combination of extreme heat, refrigeration units, and a giant tent has proved challenging. The butcher counter, named Chops, will be closed today and potentially for the remainder of the week. The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extreme heat in the South East, directly affecting Clarkson's farm in Chipping Norton.
“It turns out that when Britain reaches temperatures normally associated with southern Spain, certain things stop working properly,” Clarkson wrote. He assured customers that famous sausage rolls will still be available from the garden bars and pub bar, and that Diddly Squat Farm Shop and Hops will remain open, with some tills moved to make conditions more bearable for staff.
Dog Ban for Safety
Clarkson also imposed a temporary ban on dogs, emphasizing that while they are usually welcome, the lack of shade and temperatures near 35°C make it unsafe for them. “Today might be a good day for them to stay somewhere cool and comfortable instead,” he added.
Fans reacted with support and suggestions. One commented, “Heat is a terrible thing to deal with. I try to get all my work done in the winter.” Another recommended, “Get a refrigerated trailer. They are built for the heat.” Others praised Clarkson for prioritizing safety, with one saying, “I love this - so sensible.”
Broader Context
The announcement comes as at least 312 schools across England and Wales close fully or partly due to the heatwave. The UK is experiencing record June temperatures, with red weather warnings in effect. Clarkson's pub closure reflects the widespread impact of the extreme weather.
