Cardiff City have made a significant behind-the-scenes addition by appointing former Swansea City recruitment figure Dominic Newton as their new senior technical scout. The move, months in the making, was confirmed by Newton on Monday after he announced his departure from Swansea last week.
Newton's track record at Swansea
Newton spent three-and-a-half years at Swansea, rising through recruitment and analysis roles to become recruitment operations and analysis lead. He previously worked as first-team recruitment analyst at Swansea and held recruitment and performance analysis roles at Shrewsbury Town. During his tenure, he played a key role in identifying several standout Championship performers, including 2025 Championship Golden Boot winner Zan Vipotnik and supporters' player of the year Goncalo Franco. He also contributed to the recruitment of Ethan Galbraith, Lawrence Vigouroux, Josh Tymon, and Carl Rushworth.
In his farewell statement to Swansea, Newton said: "I am immensely proud to look back on what we have achieved as a department in this time, having played a key role in identifying the majority of the talent in the squad that have not only been awarded both fans' and players' players of the season but also the EFL Championship Team of the Season, along with the EFL Championship Golden Boot winner."
Cardiff's recruitment overhaul
Newton's arrival comes as Cardiff reshape their recruitment strategy following promotion back to the Championship under Brian Barry-Murphy. The club has been modernising its processes, with a growing emphasis on data and analytics-driven decision making. Sources have described a desire to build a recruitment "machine" capable of identifying talent through statistical analysis, scouting intelligence, and long-term planning. Models used by clubs such as Brentford have been referenced internally, and Cardiff have also drawn lessons from Vincent Tan's Belgian club KV Kortrijk.
Role and impact
As senior technical scout, Newton will combine data analysis with traditional scouting methods to identify transfer targets that fit Cardiff's playing style and financial framework. The role involves filtering players through statistical models, analysing video footage, building transfer shortlists, managing scouting databases, and assisting with opposition analysis. Newton said: "I'm happy to share that I'm starting a new position as Senior Technical Scout at Cardiff City Football Club. It's an extremely exciting time to be joining the club and I can't wait to get started in this next chapter."
Summer transfer priorities
Cardiff are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window, having already secured goalkeeper Nathan Trott on a permanent deal from FC Copenhagen. Priority targets include a central midfielder with a strong physical presence, a left-back, a winger, and a striker. Newton will help identify these players as Cardiff look to build a squad capable of establishing itself in the Championship and supporting Barry-Murphy's long-term vision.
